7 Compromises You Don’t Want to Make When Buying a House
When buying a house, the chances of finding the exact house you are looking for, in the location you want, for the price you want to pay is small. This is why when buying a house there is one word that almost always comes into play—compromise.
For most buyers, in order to make an offer, they find at least one thing that they need to compromise on. But, choosing the areas that you compromise must be done carefully.
Here are 7 areas where buyers don’t want to compromise.
-
The school district
Good school districts are generally located in good areas. That means even if you don’t have children that will be attending a public school you still want to pay attention to the ratings of the schools in the area.
-
The budget
Before buying a house you want to make sure that you can comfortably afford the payment each month. The best way to do this is to look at your monthly income and expenses and set a budget for yourself. This applies even if it’s below what your lender says she will approve you for.
Being a homeowner comes with a number of added expenses necessary to maintaining a home. You want to make sure you can afford it along with the lifestyle that you enjoy.
-
Parking
You won’t realize what a big compromise this is until it’s too late. And this will mean different things depending on your area.
For example, it could be having a designated parking space in an enclosed garage, having a driveway that two cars can fit in side by side, or being allowed to park on the street. Regardless, make sure you know what it is you’re after and then don’t compromise in this area.
-
The neighborhood
Drive around the neighborhood before you buy a house. While neighbors can change there is no guarantee that they will. If the houses in the neighborhood are not well kept or taken care of they could drag down the value of your house.
-
The condition of the house
One way to get a bigger house with less money is to buy a fixer upper. But, fixer uppers are a lot of work. And if you want a turnkey house, this is an area you don’t want to make big compromises in.
Be aware that most projects both take longer than expected and cost more than expected. If you don’t want to be hiring out or taking on projects, don’t compromise here.
-
The type of floor plan
If you’ve been looking for an open floor plan or a four bedroom house, don’t compromise on finding it. While you might be able to renovate to get what you’re after if that isn’t in the plan right off the bat you don’t want to compromise on what your needs are.
-
How long your commute is
If your commute is something that you do on a regular basis and you don’t work from home most days, then this is an area you should not compromise on. You may love your house, but the longer your commute is the less time you have to spend there with your family doing what you enjoy.
Remember that if you are buying in a highly populated area commute time might have nothing to do with the distance. Even driving a short distance can take a long time.
There are a lot of areas where compromise is good in life. But, when you are buying a house you need to be careful with what areas you choose to do so. The bottom line is don’t let yourself be pushed into something you don’t really want and will regret later.
